Rothschild Giraffe Breeding

The endangered rothschild giraffe breeding programme started with the inception of the Giraffe Centre back then in 1979. The giraffes breed naturally in an approximate 120 Acerage of land and the young calves born at the centre are introduced back into the wild at the age of 2years. The giraffes at the centre are closely observed and monitored by AFEW staff and when need be their natural diet is supplemented with Lucern Grass, salt blocks and carrots. Ever since the breeding started, the centre has handled over 50 Rothschild Giraffes and most of them have been introduced back into the wild in selected Kenya’s protected areas.

KELLY:

Estimated Year of Birth = 2001

Female brought along with Betty from Lake Nakuru Park in August 2002. She is gentle though pushy if she does not get her share of food in time, giving trademark headbutts as a reminder to be fed. She has a fading light brown colour coat and is the smallest in size of all the mature females at the centre. She has had 2 male calves during her lifetime in the centre.

Had eye injury and leg problem was treated and is doing quite well at the Giraffe Centre

IBRAHIM

A male calf born to Daisy II and Jock Junior on 3rd October, 2011. He is doing well, coping up with his older nephew Edd spending most of the time together. He is also scheduled for future translocation when he attains 2years of age.

A male calf born to Lynne and Jock Junior on 11th July, 2011. He is doing well and already very social and outgoing, lingering at the platform awaiting tit bits from the visiting school children and visitors.
